Identification Cards in Florida

Florida ID Cards

In Florida, ID cards are issued by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) Division of Driver Licenses office. An ID card proves your age, identity, or residence in many everyday activities.

We'll help you learn how to apply for a Florida ID card, renewing or replacing a lost ID card, fees and changing your name or address.

Florida REAL ID Cards

The Florida DHSMV began issuing federally-compliant REAL ID driver’s licenses in 2010. REAL IDs allow you to use your license for domestic travel and entry into federal and military buildings. For details on FL REAL IDs, see the DHSMV's guide and FAQs.

Florida ID Card Eligibility Requirements

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) offers REAL ID-compliant identification cards to residents who are 5 years old or older.

There are a few other requirements to apply for an ID card in Florida. You must:

  • Cancel any out-of-state license.
  • NOT already hold a FL driver's license.

NOTE: You cannot simultaneously hold a Florida driver's license and an identification card.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) requires you to apply for your Florida ID card in person at a Division of Driver Licenses.

DMV.ORG TIP: Skip the line to save time!

The DHSMV encourages you to make an appointment online before your office visit—that way, you don't have to wait in a stand-by line!

To do so, make an appointment online using the DHSMV's online service before visiting a nearby Division of Driver Licenses office and provide:

  • Proof of identity (1 document).
    • For non-U.S. citizens, please see “Non-U.S. Citizen FL ID Requirements" below.
  • Social Security card.
    • If you do not have a Social Security number, the DHSMV requires that you bring a letter from the Social Security Administration indicating you were never issued one, plus an acceptable document proving your identity.
  • Proof of FL residency (2 documents).
  • Payment for the $25 FL ID card fee.

The DHSMV's GatherGoGet page has a list of all acceptable documentation.

Non-U.S. Citizen FL ID Requirements

You must provide 1 document (original or certified copy) to establish your identity, in addition to all other documents listed above for U.S. citizens. However, your identity document may be different, as you will not be able to provide a U.S. birth certificate or passport.

A few examples of acceptable documents for non-U.S. citizens include:

  • A valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card—I-551 for Lawful Permanent Residents.
  • A valid passport for non-immigrants (excluding asylum applicants and refugees).
  • Department of Homeland Security document (showing proof of lawful presence).

The DHSMV provides a complete list of acceptable primary identification documents, or you can visit the GatherGoGet website to create your own customized list of documents.
