Replacing a Lost Title in Indiana

Did you recently lose or damage your Indiana vehicle title? Even though it's an important document, titles unfortunately get misplaced all the time. Replace your ahead of time, just in case you need the title when you're selling your car or adding/removing names from it.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) license agency provides a variety of ways to get your replacement title. All you need to remember to do is make sure you have an unexpired photo ID handy when you visit their offices.

Approved IDs include:

  • Driver's license.
  • State-issued ID.
  • School ID.
  • Military ID.
  • Bank card.
  • Passport.
  • Probation card.
  • Work ID.
  • Membership card.

Also, you'll need to bring something that will identify the vehicle, such as a registration card or the vehicle identification number (VIN). If there's a lien on the vehicle, you will need to present a completed release form from the lien holder.

How to Replace an Indiana Title

Once you have all of your paperwork in order, the Indiana BMV gives you several options where you can replace your lost IN vehicle title. You may use any of the following means:

  • By mail.

When mailing in your request for a duplicate title, you must submit:

Otherwise, you simply need to bring proper identification, your fee, and a completed application to the above location of your choice.

You will receive your title in the mail.

Speed Title

If you do not have that much time, you can use the Indiana BMV's speed-title service and apply for a "Speed Title." However, this option will cost you an extra $25.

Depending on the delivery address, Speed Titles are mailed accordingly:

  • Indiana street addresses are delivered via UPS ground service.
  • Indiana post office boxes are delivered via USPS Priority Mail.
  • All out-of-state addresses are delivered via USPS Priority Mail.

Adding/Removing Names From Indiana Titles

If you would like to apply for joint ownership or remove a name from your vehicle title, you will need to apply for another copy of it.

As the current owner, you will need to sign in the purchaser's section along with the information of the other person.

When you want to remove a name from an Indiana title, you'll need to fill in the seller's section with the person's name who is being removed AND sign the purchaser's section as if you were purchasing the vehicle.
