Voter Registration in Wisconsin

You must register to vote in Wisconsin before you can vote in election. You can submit your voter registration online, by mail or in person.

Voter Registration Eligibility

To register and vote in Wisconsin, you must:

• Be at least 18 years old.
  • You can register early as long as you will be 18 years old by or on Election Day.
• Be a United State citizen.
• Have lived in the area for 28 days before the election with no intent of moving.
• You are NOT currently incarcerated, on parole, or on probation for a felony conviction.*

After you complete your supervised release your voting rights are automatically restored. You must re-register to vote.

Register to Vote in Wisconsin

You can register to vote online, by mail, or in person.

No matter which method of registration you choose, be prepared to provide:

• Your driver's license or state ID number.
  • If neither are available you can provide your Social Security number.
• An approved proof of residence.

Register Online

You are able to begin the voting registration process online. The system will walk you through all of the steps you will need to take to successfully register to vote whether you are a regular voter, a temporary or permanent overseas voter or a military voter.

Register By Mail

Here's what to do:

• Complete an Application for Voter Registration (Form EL-131).
• Mail the completed application to your local municipal clerk (first-time voters must include proof of residency).

NOTE: The application must be postmarked no later than the 20th day before the election.

Register in Person

Register with your local municipal clerk by 5 p.m. (or the close of business) on the Friday before the election. You may also register at the polls on Election Day.

Register on Election Day

Wisconsin election laws make it easy to register to vote, and you can even register to vote at your local polling place on the day of the election if you are not already registered.

Military & Overseas Voter Registration

You are eligible to register to vote through the Federal Voting Assistance Program by completing the Voter Registration and Absentee Ballot Request Federal Post Card Application (FPCA Form 76) if you are:

• A member of the military stationed outside of Wisconsin.
• The dependent of a member of the military stationed outside of the state.
• A WI resident living overseas.

The FPCA serves as BOTH voter registration and a request for an absentee ballot.

Military and overseas voters can also register to vote using the methods outlined above. Unlike regular voters, you CAN request your absentee ballot when registering online.

Absentee Registration & Voting

If you're out of town or otherwise unable to make it to the polls, you can:

• Register online or by mail.
  • See Register to Vote in Wisconsin above.
• Apply to vote with an absentee ballot.
  • Mail a completed Wisconsin Application for Absentee Ballot (Form EL-121) to your municipal clerk. (If possible, you can deliver this application in person.)
  • Include a copy of acceptable photo identification. The state provides more information about approved photo ID.

Name or Address Change on Voter Registration

If you move or if you legally change your name, you are required to update your voter registration.

To do so, you will need to re-register to vote online or download and the Application for Voter Registration (Form EL-131), and mail it back to the municipal clerk in charge of your area.
